A day in the life of an Evil Overlord


The task ahead is monumental, I require materials only found in the furthest corners and the deepest recesses of this world. Exactly how I will obtain them all I do not yet know, but I do know that I require an army. No force on this plane will stand between me and my goal to end it...

To give the player a sense of the life of an evil overlord I thought a while about the fantasy I was trying to create. I want a gameplay loop that pulls you on to the next step. I have three modes here, or perhaps you could characterize it as two modes and a menu.

  1. Stronghold
  2. Map view
  3. Combat

They should occur in that order and repeat. to make this happen, the player needs a reason to be in each place, but most specifically the stronghold. the Stronghold has the task of showing the players progression, and i intend to use it as a way to break up the various menus and tasks between battles. my thinking is, because the combat is so idle, we need to have a more active phase where the player is doing tasks. so here is my 'day in the life of' an evil overlord:


complete venture - in the map you select a venture based on it's rewards, and observe the battle

admin keep loot- if you win you have earnt a bunch of loot, to sell or stash, go from map room to throne room to see your spoils

sleep- player needs to return to their bedroom to initiate sleep and change the day

recruit units- check which new units have been rolled in the vassals quaters

equip units- apply your loot you got yesterday to the new troops you got today ready for a battle

and repeat..

so each room has at least a potential function in the loop, here is a map

the stronghold needs to convey gradual improvement. i dont want moving around it to be arduous, usually in game the 'recover' phase is menus or like a shop, in this game the 'recover' phase is actually the active phase, and the combat is the 'passive' stage... anyhow i hope this is fun! 

there is only one way to find out and that is to build it... and.. play it obviously
